Glowing Treasures by Arthur Szyk
At Congregation Mishkan Or

Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver of The Temple (Tifereth Israel) in University Circle had seen the work of Polish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) who had come to America in 1940. In 1947 Szyk was commissioned to design two major works.

  • For the Gries Memorial Chapel, 12 illuminated stained glass windows, one for each of the Tribes of Israel

  • For the War Service Alcove outside the chapel, above the Book of Remembrance honoring the 776 men and women in The Temple family who served in World War II, three stained glass windows showing Famous Jewish Warriors: Gideon, Samson, and Judah Maccabee.

To share the beauty of these works by Szyk, in 2017 The Temple - Tifereth Israel published a booklet describing them. Thanks to Dr. Katya Oicherman, Director of the Mishkan Or Museum of Jewish Cultures, we are able to display the entire booklet, as amended in 2024, here.
