Unsleben Bavaria - home of Cleveland's first Jewish settlers

This 2015 photo by Marc Shecter shows the Village of Unsleben in Bavaria, home of the 15 Jews whose arrival in Cleveland in 1839 marked the start of our Jewish community. It was taken from the Jewish cemetery, one mile east of the town.

Learn more on our page on the Unsleben Jewish Cemetery, our pages on Simpson Thorman who invited his townsmen to join him in here in Cleveland and enjoy freedom and opportunity, and the Alsbacher Document they brought with them.
